Sliding Door Off the Track?
Step 1: Don’t lift it yourself. Sliding door panels weigh 80–150+ pounds. Dropping one breaks the glass and can hurt you. Step 2: Call Speedy. We’ll be there same-day with the equipment to do it safely.
Three reasons sliding doors come off the track.
A sliding door doesn’t come off the track randomly. Something specific failed. See our complete Florida sliding door guide for the deep dive on everything we fix. We diagnose which one when we lift the door back on — and fix it before it happens again.
1. Rollers worn out (most common)
Original rollers wore so flat that the door dropped below the bottom track. The door is now resting on its own bottom rail, scraping. Fix: roller replacement + lift back on. $300–$450.
2. Track damage
Hurricane debris, a heavy chair leg, a cabinet drag — something dented or bent the bottom track and the rollers came out. Fix: track repair or capping + lift back on. $400–$550.
3. Frame shifted (rare)
Foundation movement after a major weather event knocked the door head jamb out of square. The door is no longer captured properly. Fix: alignment + roller adjustment. $450–$650.
The 4 mistakes we see homeowners make.
- ✖ Don’t try to lift it yourself. The panel is 80–150 pounds and unwieldy. We’ve seen broken glass, broken fingers, and worse.
- ✖ Don’t use a hammer. Tapping the rollers to “help” them back into the track damages the rollers and bends the track. Now you have two problems instead of one.
- ✖ Don’t leave it propped open. A propped door is a security and child-safety hazard. We schedule same-day for off-track jobs — even if you’re paying for the diagnosis.
- ✖ Don’t accept a $1,500+ quote without a second opinion. 90% of off-track jobs are $199–$449. Companies quoting full replacement on an off-track door are upselling.
The Speedy off-track procedure.
A typical off-track job takes 60–90 minutes. Here’s what happens:
- 1 Two-person lift, proper equipment. We bring suction-cup glass lifters and we don’t do single-person lifts on a panel that size.
- 2 Diagnose root cause. Once the door is off, we inspect the rollers, the track, and the frame alignment. We tell you what failed.
- 3 Fix the cause. Replace rollers, cap the track, or realign the frame. Whatever is needed.
- 4 Lift the panel back on. Properly seated, properly aligned, properly tested.
- 5 You test it before we leave. Open, close, lock. 1-year warranty in writing.
Can my sliding door be put back on the track same-day?
Almost always yes. We prioritize off-track calls because the door is unsafe in that state. Most calls answered with a same-day appointment within 60 minutes.
How much does putting a sliding door back on track cost?
From $199 — that includes lifting the door back on AND fixing the root cause (rollers, track, or alignment). Free written estimate before any work.
What if the glass cracked when the door fell?
We do not replace glass — that’s a glazier. But we can refer you to glaziers we trust, and we can do the mechanical work concurrently with the glass order.
Will this happen again?
Not if we fix the root cause — which we always do. New rollers, capped track, or proper alignment. 1-year warranty in writing.
