Repair or Replace Your Sliding Door?
The sales rep who quoted you a $4,000 new sliding door is probably wrong. 9 out of 10 sliding doors that "need replacement" can be restored for Starting at $199. The 1 in 10 that genuinely need replacement has a specific set of symptoms — and a worn roller is not one of them.
The math
| Path | Cost | Time | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speedy full restoration | Starting at $349 | 90-180 min | Same-day, you stay home |
| New aluminum slider installed | $3,000 – $5,500 | 1-3 weeks | Permit, ordering, install day |
| Premium hurricane-impact slider | $5,500 – $9,000 | 3-6 weeks | Major project |
For a door that grinds, drags, jumps the track, has a broken latch, or won't lock — restoration wins on every dimension. The "feels new" outcome is functionally identical at 1/10th the cost.
When repair is the right call (90% of doors)
- Door grinds, drags, or takes two hands. Worn rollers — Starting at $179 fix.
- Door jumped the track. Roller + alignment — Starting at $199.
- Track is gouged or pitted. Cap or replace track — Starting at $199.
- Latch is broken or door won't lock. Lock service — Starting at $129.
- Multiple problems at once. Full restoration bundles them — Starting at $349.
- Door is 15-30+ years old but not damaged. Restoration brings it back to factory feel.
When replacement is the right call (~10% of doors)
- Glass is broken or shattered. Glass replacement isn't repair — it's a glazier job ($800-$1,500). At that point, sometimes a whole new door makes sense.
- Sealed-pane glass is fogged. Moisture got between the panes; the seal is gone. The glass unit itself needs replacement.
- Frame is structurally warped. Foundation settling has bent the frame so the door no longer sits square. No repair fixes the underlying geometry.
- Hurricane damage. Track ripped from frame, frame cracked, glass shattered.
- Pre-1970 door with no parts available. Genuinely rare. We carry vintage-compatible parts for almost everything.
What unscrupulous companies will tell you
Some firms make their margin selling new doors. They will tell you that:
- "Your door is too old to fix" — false. Older doors are usually easier to fix because parts are well-known.
- "Replacement parts aren't available" — false 99% of the time. Aftermarket rollers, tracks, and locks fit every common brand.
- "Full replacement comes with a 10-year warranty" — true, but Speedy's 1-year warranty on a $500 fix saves you $4,000 vs $4,500. Not even close.
- "Energy efficiency is much better" — true, but only matters if your current door has a broken seal. Repair fixes seals; full replacement isn't required.
The Speedy promise
We will tell you straight if your door genuinely needs replacement. We don't sell new doors — we only repair — so we have no incentive to upsell. If your door is in the 1-in-10 category, we'll say so and refer you to a glazier or installer we trust.
